Is Tallow Cream Safe for Babies and Kids?

Thinking about tallow for your baby or child's dry skin? Here's what to know, what to look for, and how to patch test safely.

If you're a parent, you've probably stood in the baby aisle reading ingredient lists and wondering what's actually okay to put on your child's skin. Tallow is getting a lot of attention, so it's fair to ask: is tallow cream safe for babies and kids?

The short answer

Many parents use tallow on their children's dry skin, and it's a simple, short-ingredient option. But every child's skin is different, and babies in particular have thin, delicate skin. So the honest answer is: it depends on your child, which is why patch testing and a quick chat with your doctor or pharmacist matter.

Why do parents choose tallow?

Kids' skin dries out fast. Baths, wind, sun, school sports and changing seasons all take their toll, and cracked cheeks, dry knees and rough elbows are common. A rich, simple moisturiser helps lock in moisture and protect the skin's surface.

Tallow is naturally similar in composition to the sebum our skin produces, and it contains fat-soluble vitamins A, D, E and K. Many parents also like that a good tallow cream doesn't need water, preservatives, emulsifiers or fragrance.

What to look for in a kids' cream

  • A short ingredient list you can read and understand
  • No added fragrance, which is one of the most common triggers for skin reactions
  • No essential oils in large amounts, as natural doesn't mean non-irritating
  • Clear sourcing, so you know where the tallow comes from
  • No water-based fillers that need preservatives to stay stable

How to patch test

Always patch test before using any new product on a baby or child.

  • Apply a small amount to a patch of skin, like the inner forearm or behind the knee.
  • Wait 24 hours and watch for redness, itching or irritation.
  • If there's no reaction, you can start using it on a larger area.
  • If irritation occurs, stop using it.

Tips for using tallow on little ones

  • Use a small amount. A little goes a long way, and tallow melts on contact with warm skin.
  • Apply to slightly damp skin after a bath to help seal in moisture.
  • Start with the unscented option, especially for babies and sensitive skin.
  • Keep it away from broken, weeping or infected skin.

When to see a doctor

Tallow is a moisturiser, not a medical treatment. If your child has eczema that's severe, weeping or looks infected, or if you're ever unsure, speak to your doctor, pharmacist or child health nurse before trying a new product. This is especially important for newborns and young babies.

What's in Tallow Farm cream?

Our hero Unscented Tallow Cream is made with grass-fed tallow, shea butter and jojoba oil. No water, no preservatives, no emulsifiers and no fragrance.

Tallow Farm started because my daughter's skin reacted to every product we tried. We stripped it back to the simplest ingredients we could, and she finally stopped reacting. So this one is personal.
